Tour - Le Marais Picnic

The charming and historic Le Marais located in the 3rd and 4th arrondissements is our destination today. As we travel down Rue de Réaumur by bus we'll see many stunning buildings with a variety of interesting architectural features including Caryatids and Atlantes. We'll get off the bus at the Arts et Métiers, and take a quick side trip to 57 Rue Turbigo to view the Angel of Turbigo. We'll walk along the Square du Temple, a lovely  park, which occupies the former site of a medieval fortress built by the Knights Templar, heading towards the Marché des Enfants Rouge, for a quick peek at the oldest indoor market in Paris

Across the street from the market, on Rue Charlot, is the Caractere de Cochon, a red-painted temple to piggie goodness including L’Ibaïona,” a Basque ham aged for 36 months made from pigs fed on chestnuts. We'll make our selections and have classic beurre jambon sandwiches made for our picnic, not forgetting to order a snowball sausage flavored with truffle to share. With regret we'll depart this marvelous shop and stroll down Rue de Bretagne, stepping into Poilane for some of their classic butter cookies and Popelini for a cream puff or two.

We'll cross Rue de Turenne, and catch the bus at Bretagne, taking it to Place des Vosges. Here we'll reflect on the history of this classic beauty and enjoy our picnic. From here we'll venture on to the Musee Carnavelet, a museum devoted to the history of Paris.

Our next destination is Famille Mary, our favorite honey store in Paris where we'll do a little shopping before going to Paroisse Saint Paul-Saint Louis, a lovely church with many memorable statues and a coquille shaped font that was donated to the church by Victor Hugo in gratitude.

Next is a walk to the Hotel de Sens, a castle-like private residence built in the 15th century to view the exterior (including the canon ball), the garden and the library.

We'll bid adieu to the Marais, take the bus to near the Tuilleries where we'll check out the golden Joan of Arc statue and Place Colette before catching our bus back to Montmartre.
